NiaLena Caravasos Achieves "Rising Super Star Lawyer" Status

In July, Attorney NiaLena Caravasos was selected by her Pennsylvania peers as a "rising super star lawyer," an honor reserved for 2.5% of the Pennsylvania Bar. As a result, an article will appear shortly about her in a Law & Politics publication for attorneys. Her work will also be featured in the December issue of Philadelphia Magazine, a periodical with general circulation.

Ms. Caravasos is a shareholder partner in the Law Firm of F. Emmett Fitzpatrick, P.C. (http://www.toplaw.com) in Philadelphia. She concentrates her practice in the areas of federal and state criminal defense and has received the highest professional rating (AV) by Martindale-Hubbell (http://www.martindale.com).

She is the co-author with Mr. Fitzpatrick of an article entitled, "Ineffective Assistance of Counsel", which was published in both The Philadelphia Lawyer and The Forum. She is a member of the Pennsylvania and Massachusetts Bars.

Described by press reports as an "extremely thorough" and "tireless advocate", Ms. Caravasos was the youngest attorney, and the only female attorney, to defend a reputed organized crime figure in the federal RICO prosecution of United States v. Joseph Merlino. She also led the defense during cross-examination. Following her representation in the almost five-month federal organized crime racketeering trial, Ms. Caravasos' closing argument on behalf of her client, Frank Gambino, was selected among nationwide submissions to be featured in the Spotlight section of the web site (http://www.juryargument.homestead.com) for the Center For Criminal Justice Advocacy.

Ms. Caravasos has lectured in the area of criminal defense for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI) and is also a frequent guest at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where she lectures on the defense of white collar crime.

Ms. Caravasos graduated cum laude from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a dual major in Marketing and Multinational Management. She graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1993 with several awards, including the Commencement BNA Law Student Award as well as the American Jurisprudence Award in Criminal Trial Practice. After interning in the District Attorney's Offices of both Philadelphia and Cambridge (Massachusetts), Ms. Caravasos served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Lisa Richette of the Homicide Program of the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. In 1997, she joined the Law Firm of F. Emmett Fitzpatrick, P.C. She is also a member of the Hellenic Lawyers Association, Who's Who in American Law, the Federal Bar Association Criminal Law Committee, and both the Pennsylvania and National Associations of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
