Assumption Receives Clearance for Building

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Dracut has received clearance and permission for the building of a new House of Worship. The way was cleared at a town Conservation Committee meeting on July 16, which was attended by many parishioners. Excavation and commencement of the rebuilding is scheduled for the month of August, which is also the month when the Koimissis Tes Theotokou is celebrated. "For a long time we have been waiting for this great day," a church press release said, reminding parishioners and supporters that "our long-awaited dream cannot be realized apart from financial committment and generous support...to favors done by God, we need to respond in kind." Annunciation Parish Plans Farewell Gathering for Fr. Dean Panagos and his Family

Revered Dean Panagos celebrated his last liturgy as parish priest of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday, August 19th. Father Dean has been assigned by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of the Diocese of Boston to serve as Dean of the Diocesan Cathedral of the Annunciation in Boston beginning September 1st.

The accomplishments of the past 5 ½ years of Father Dean have been many. He has led the parish in the construction of the educational wing to the church, "Young and Heart" and "Young and Restless" ministries were formed, Eleftheria Dance Troupe began, the Greek Festival was revived, a "shut-in" visitation ministries began as well as numerous philanthropic projects to mention just a few!

Island of Lesvos Association Scholarship

The Island of Lesvos Association of New England is pleased to offer two scholarships of $500 each and extend an invitation to all eligible candidates to apply. According to association members, applicants should be high school graduates entering a 4-year institution of higher learning who are living within New England and whose parent has been a member of the association in good standing for three years. The criteria for selection include the submission of a complete application, an essay, a copy of a high school transcript, and documentation of post-secondary entrance. Recipients will be assessed on academic merit and quality of essay response. Association members plan an award ceremony for the recipients at the Fall Scholarship Dinner Dance at Jimmy's Allenhurst on November 3rd. Deadline for the receipt of the application is October 5, 2001.
