Lowell's Big Fat Greek Festival

LOWELL, MA --You saw "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," the box-office surprise that grossed nearly $350,000,000 worldwide on its way to becoming the highest grossing independent film ever. And you may have even seen the TV spin-off, "My Big Fat Greek Life."

But now it's time for the real thing.

The Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, in partnership with the city of Lowell, will present "Lowell's Big Fat Greek Festival" Friday through Sunday, June 20-22, on the grounds of the Tsongas Arena. The three-day festival--the parish's 11th celebration of Greek culture and first ever in conjunction with the city--will open Friday at 5pm, and run until 11pm. The hours will be 11am to 11pm on Saturday and 11am to 7pm on Sunday.

"This is going to be something special," said Michael Fokas, chairman of this year's festival. "We're excited to be working with the city of Lowell to put on what may very well be the biggest Greek festival in New England."

Among many activities, participants will be able to:

  • Enjoy lamb-on-the-stick, spinach pie, baklava and other scrumptious Greek fare.

  • Dance to the Greek music of live bands and deejays throughout the three-day period.

  • Browse and shop at the Greek marketplace.

  • Sign up for a church tour to view the exquisite mosaic work that has made Transfiguration one of the most beautiful churches in the country. Visitors can also tour the parish's new building addition, which is scheduled to open prior to the festival.

  • Accompany kids to the children's section and watch them play in the amusement area.

  • Compete in the Sunday morning road race.

The Festival Committee is seeking vendors for the three-day event, as well as businesses and individuals interested in advertising in the program book.
