Hellenic Society "Paideia"

of New Hampshire
Press Release

The Hellenic Society Paideia of NH, the Classical Association of New England, and the University of New Hampshire Classics cordially invite you to a presentation of Plato’s The Apology of Socrates. This event will take place at the Johnson Theater of the Paul Creative Arts Center of the University of New Hampshire, 30 College Road in Durham, NH on Friday evening March 9, 2007 at 8:30 PM.

Plato’s The Apology of Socrates, is a one-man theatrical performance that lasts approximately one hour and twenty minutes. It reenacts Socrates’ defense in the Athenian court and his rebuttals to a guilty verdict and sentence of death. This treatment transports the viewer from ancient times to our contemporary world, and in doing so reaffirms the relevance of Socrates’ thoughts in today’s society.

Emmy Award Winner actor, Yannis Simonides, along with Broadway Veteran director, Loukas N. Skipitaris, Academy Award Winner costume designer, Theoni V. Aldredge, and percussionist, Caryn Heiman have presented the Apology at universities, schools, libraries, communities and theaters throughout the United States and Greece to great acclaim. It was also recently performed at The United Nations and received a standing ovation from the attending diplomats who understood both the humor and contemporary relevance of this fresh translation by the actor and director. During the Athens Olympics, Yannis Simonides was invited by NBC’s The Today Show to perform a small portion of The Apology in the Athens Agora and speak about Socrates. The performance is typically followed with a question and answer period when everyone in attendance has the opportunity to discuss the issues of ethics, justice and civic duty as addressed by The Apology as well as more specific questions about Socrates and Hellenism.

Seating for this performance is complimentary from the Hellenic Society Paideia of New Hampshire and is available to the general public without charge. All are welcomed.
